Tips on How to Keep Your Makeup Lasting Longer: Oily Skin Edition

If you’re a makeup lover, one thing plagues your existence and interaction with makeup more than any other. It’s more challenging than lining your lips in the perfect shape, it’s more difficult than getting cat eyeliner right in one go, and it’s more elusive than the perfect nude lipstick. Getting your face makeup to last all day or all night has to be one of the biggest challenges when applying whatever kind of makeup you use: especially if you have skin that tends to be oily. You don’t want to try for a dewy look and have your foundation sliding down over your chin by mid-morning, but you also don’t want to overcorrect with powder foundations and powder to set and look like some Victorian relic. It’s tricky to find a balance, but we’ve got all the tips you need, from skin preparation to makeup application and maintenance, to keep your face looking fresh all day.

Use a Clay Mask

Clay masks help to balance out your skin and draw any lingering oil to the surface to be easily removed. Use one of these between two and three times a week, depending on the level of oil that your skin produces. Getting all that gunk out of your pores regularly will leave them open and help them function as they are supposed to.

2. Cleanse

Always, always, ALWAYS cleanse your face properly before applying makeup. We recommend you use your cleansing face wash and follow that up with micellar water. The water’s micelles (oil molecules) act as magnets for any lingering dirt or particles that may not belong on your face. You can’t build a house on a soft or uneven foundation, so why would you build a makeup look on a dirty one? Start with a fresh canvas, and your look will always stick.

3. Hydrate

We know that hydrating might sound counterintuitive to someone with very oily skin. Whether your oily skin is oily as a reaction to being under-hydrated or whether that’s just its natural state, all skin needs hydration from the inside and the outside. Go for hyaluronic acid and vitamin C gel, and don’t forget the SPF! Drinking plenty of water will help hydrate your skin from the inside and keep your body functioning well.

4. Prime Your Whole Face

That includes your lids and lips! The primer comes between your oily skin and the makeup you’ll be applying. The primer takes the heat and deals with the oil rather than it heading straight through your skin to your makeup, creating a premature makeup meltdown. It also helps prevent dodgy dirt and pollution from getting into your pores and keeps a lot of the makeup on your face out of them as well. You can use face primer everywhere or separately get primers for the face, lips and eyes.

5. Matte Finish Foundation

We’re not talking Dream Matte Mousse here; this is not the 2000s! While we don’t want you over-correcting and coming out like Elizabeth the 1st, you do need some matte finish products to counteract the natural oiliness of your skin. Try a powder foundation or a long-wear foundation with a lightweight cover. Too much heavy cover could clog your pores and cause your skin to produce more oil, which is a big no-no. Blending and pressing the product into your skin helps create a smooth, blurred-out look. Use a foundation brush to apply and a beauty blender sponge to spread the product and fade it into your neck.

6. Always Set

Though you might be tempted to set with powder, we advise against it. Always finish your look with a setting spray before applying mascara. Let it dry thoroughly before you go for your lashes, else you’ll have panda eyes within a few short minutes. Go for a simple, natural spray or make your own out of rosewater, glycerine and witch hazel.

7. Carry Blotting Sheets

Blotting sheets are your new best friend. Press them lightly into your skin and let them suck up any oil on the surface. Don’t wipe, or you’ll remove your makeup! Blotting sheets come in tiny little packs, so they’re perfect to carry with you wherever you go.
